Ballantyne is located 18 miles south of Uptown and is fondly regarded as the emerald city of the Charlotte region. It was "born" in the early 2000's with the addition of the I-485 beltway around Charlotte that opened up this area for development. Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina and boasts 520 miles of shoreline extending into four counties: northern Mecklenburg, southern Iredell, eastern Lincoln and Catawba. It was created in 1963 by Duke Power (now called Duke Energy) by damming the Catawba River. While Lake Norman has long been a popular destination for outdoor and water enthusiasts, most of the development has been in four towns near the lake – not necessarily on it: Cornelius, Huntersville, Davidson and Mooresville – all of which are also conveniently located off I-77. LAKE WYLIE, SC
Lake Wylie is a census designated place in York County, South Carolina, and it is also the name of the beautiful man-made lake with 325 miles of shoreline in South and North Carolina. Lake Wylie's shores expand into three counties: York (SC), Gaston (NC) and Mecklenburg NC). Lake Wylie was originally called Lake Catawba and was formed in 1904, when the Catawba Power Company (now Duke Energy) built the Catawba Dam and Power Plant near India Hook, SC. In 1925, the Southern Power Company, a new hydro-electric plant was built and the lake was renamed Lake Wylie after Dr. Jake Stephen Wylie who was one of the founders of the original Catawba Power Company.

Plaza Midwood is located one mile east of Uptown and was established in 1910, as a streetcar suburb of Uptown. It is a bustling community centered around the upscale SouthPark Mall, which is the largest mall in North Carolina.
